Pilates Terms & Definitions
Arcs: Supportive arcs that are used to support the hips and back while performing posture correcting stretches and motions.
Barre: A long horizontal bar, most commonly seen in ballet studios, which aids in balance and flexibility training.
Barrel: A round or half round supportive piece of equipment that helps correct posture and flexibility in the back.
Cadillac: A large apparatus that features arm and leg springs, fuzzy loops to hang from, a push-through stretch bar and a trapeze, used for suspension Pilates movements.
CoreAlign®: A framework that encloses two sliding carts on a track, used for smooth resistance while working on balance and core strength training.
Mat: A flat padded mat used by Pilates exercisers to cushion spines, hips and extremeties while performing exercises.
Pilates: A system of physical conditioning involving low-impact exercises and stretches, performed on specialized equipment.
Reformer: The central piece of Pilates equipment used for exercises by both men and women, young and old. It appears as a long bench with specialized apparati geared to helping support a wide variety of movements.
Reformer Tower: An extension on the Reformer apparatus that allows for more variety of movements that push the body into controlled motion higher than the base apparatus normally supports.
Wunda Chair: A very compact piece of equipment that features spring resistance for all levels of abilities and motions.
